Australian Trophy Estate With Helipad Pushes The Bounds Of Luxury

There’s lavish, and then there’s Mandalay House.

The Mediterranean-style trophy estate is in coastal Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays region of Queensland, Australia.

Created by property developer and yacht seller Neil Murray and his wife Denise over a three-and-a-half year period, the spread boasts a private helipad, a rock-walled marina, two jet-ski bays and a boat shed.

But that’s just for starters.

The 4,242-square-meter, or more than one acre, waterfront site takes in sweeping views of the Great Barrier Reef, nearby islands and the Coral Sea. Terraces and gardens lead down to the water. National parkland forms the backdrop at the other side of the property.

The estate capitalizes on the vista with a well-positioned horizon pool, whose blue waters seem to blend into the ocean. A column supported roof shelters part of the resort-inspired pool, which is ringed with planters of palms. An adjacent portico with an outdoor kitchen creates a spot for al fresco dining or a drink after a dip in the water.

A porte-cochère entry with a fountain is accessed by a circular driveway. Beyond the carved wood and glass front door is a double-height domed foyer containing a curving marble staircase.

The use of the word “spacious” would seem an understatement here. The compound measures 2,649 square meters, or about 28,500 square feet, of living and entertaining space.

The primary bedroom suite alone accounts for 144 square meters, or 1,550 square feet, with a private sitting area, a fireplace and a spa-like bathroom. The dressing room itself is 52 square meters, about 560 square feet.

The six additional bedrooms all have sitting rooms and bathrooms.

The elegant living room’s high ceilings are clad in wood and heavy beams. That room, the library and the home office overlook the swimming pool. The dining room is designed for grand banquets. The climate controlled wine cellar has a tasting room.

The kitchen features marble counters, Miele appliances, a center island and a butler’s pantry. An archway connects the kitchen to a light and bright breakfast room.

There’s also a home theater, a gym and a separate guest cottage.
